The perfectionist in the Bollywood industry aka Aamir Khan is ready to conquer the box office and blow away the audience with his sheer presence and utter dedication in portraying the assigned character. Nitesh Tiwari’s directed, ‘Dangal’ meaning ‘Wrestling’ based on a biographical sports drama is on the roll to release on 23rd December.
Dangal, unlike the other contemporary movies is in the talks for certain positive reasons. The movie represents the struggle of two young girls growing up to mark their presence in the field of wrestling. Aamir Khan has proposed to make this film tax (entertainment) -free in order to make it more accessible to people enabling the spread of a strong social message of women empowerment. Adding to this, the body transformation of Aamir to play the character has been doing rounds with a video message and certainly you can’t miss that!
Let’s walk down the memory lane and see which Bollywood treat in the recent past was made tax free.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
This movie tops the list being one of Aamir’s own produced and directed Indian drama, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ which showcased the story of an 8 year old dyslexic boy played by Darsheel Safari. The movie revolves around his life events as he continues to struggle with academics and finding peace in art. It was definitely an influential movie and surely made the audience shed some tears of enlightenment.
Paan Singh Tomar (2012)
Tigmanshu Dhulia’s ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ was a biographical movie based on true events in the life of an athlete who was also a soldier in Indian Army, Paan Singh Tomar. This film earned credit points not only from the critics but also was a Box office hit. Irrfan Khan, who played the character, was greatly applauded for his excellent acting justifying each frame.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)
Based on an Indian athlete, Milkha Singh, the movie directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, was a superhit domestically as well as overseas. Farhan Akhtar played the lead role with Pavan Malhotra and Art Malik in supporting roles and Sonam Kapoor in a cameo. The movie brilliantly projected the journey of Milkha in becoming a national champion runner and an Olympian overcoming his fears and difficult obstacles.
Mary Kom (2014)
It is another sports biographical film but still stands as a unique one. The movie not only saw the presence of outstanding Priyanka Chopra depicting her strong character on screen, but also perfectly brought out the heroine, Mary Kom as the story did great justice in bringing out her journey of becoming a World Boxing Champion. In the context to spread women empowerment, the film made no compromise.
Rani Mukherjee starrer ‘Mardaani’ was an Indian Crime Thriller directed by Pradeep Sarkar that dealt with the concern of human trafficking in India. Rani’s character was strong and bold as a Police officer. The movie certainly displays the harsh reality of trafficking menace, simultaneously portraying the influential and powerful existence of women in society, thereby, seeking to bring about a change.
All these movies, in one or the other way deal with society concerns and inspirations directly. The decision on making ‘Dangal’ tax free is still in talking terms. We’ll have to wait to be updated.
