Breaking all the orthodox and stereotypical barriers of society in regards to gender bias and same-sex relations, this musical duo has broken down the wall, outraging a bold message.
November 27 saw the Delhi Queer Pride Parade 2016 openly supporting the LGBTQ community against the Constitution’s Section 377 that criminalises same-sex lives. Meanwhile, December 2 saw the release of the song, ‘Lay You Down’ sung by Nanok and produced by Walkabout Films. The video has been directed by Navzar Eranee and features two beautiful and talented artists, Anushka Manchanda and Monica Dogra. And undoubtedly they are captivating a lot of attention with the brilliantly shot video.
Same-sex controversy was back then accounted with Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi during Deepa Mehta’s film ‘Fire’ based on lesbian relationship that even involved a kiss, but certainly the perceptions even today remain unchanged. This song vividly portrays two women in love, making love; yet covering different aspects of a relationship like differences, making up and happily sinking in that feeling. Although, being women, their struggle to do what they want to do ‘together’ is pretty evident.
With dark background and minimalistic lights, their (lesbians’) shriek screams of the ‘want of freedom’ is loud and clear. Focusing on the concern of discrimination of same sex lives, is rightly showcased with no window dressing and in no way any frame suggests vulgarity.
Anushka Manchanda and Monica Dogra appear seamlessly amazing in the music video. They love, they fight, they cry, they howl, but most importantly stays connected no matter what. While, the music keeps you engaged with each beat and definitely the one to keep on repeat.
Above all, this music video will garner supporters as well as haters. But it is high time to see beyond the blurred lines and recognise the need of the hour. Accepting is the biggest thing one could do! And maybe then it will be much merrier to say that December is here!
